How Rocky Found Hope and Independence Through Supported Living in San Gabriel

At Homies, we believe everyone deserves the chance to live with dignity, connection, and choice. That belief came to life recently through Rocky’s story — a powerful example of how supported living in San Gabriel can change lives.
Feeling Stuck, But Not Giving Up
When we first met Rocky, he was in a tough spot. He had been living on the couch at his girlfriend’s parents’ home. He couldn’t live with his own family, and despite his efforts, he didn’t see a clear path forward. Without a space to call his own, Rocky was starting to lose hope that independent living was possible for him.
He wasn’t looking for just a place to live. He was looking for stability, purpose, and a support system that made him feel empowered.
Creating a Plan for Supported Living in San Gabriel
Our team got to work with one clear goal: to find Rocky a living arrangement where he could thrive. That meant finding a roommate — but not just any roommate.
We were looking for someone who was reliable, kind, and familiar with the I/DD (intellectual and developmental disabilities) community. But beyond that, we wanted someone who would be a true partner for Rocky. Someone who could help him navigate the daily challenges of living independently, while also sharing a space that felt like home.
For months, we screened potential matches. There were close calls, but nothing felt quite right.
A Turning Point — Rocky Takes the Lead
After about three months of searching, Rocky surprised us. He introduced us to someone from his past — his former job coach, Anthony. Years ago, Anthony had helped Rocky secure a post-school internship. They had stayed in touch, and Rocky trusted him.
At the time, Anthony was still living with his own parents. Like Rocky, he was ready for a change. The timing was right for both of them. Anthony had the heart and the experience we were looking for, and Rocky felt empowered to take an active role in choosing who he would live with.
After talking with Anthony and completing our vetting process, we knew we had found the perfect match.
A New Home in Covina — and a New Beginning
Now, Rocky and Anthony are living together in a two-bedroom apartment in Covina. It’s not just a housing arrangement — it’s a meaningful partnership built on trust, friendship, and mutual respect.
Supported living in San Gabriel doesn’t always follow a straight line. For Rocky, the journey involved uncertainty, patience, and courage. But the outcome has been life-changing. He’s no longer on the couch. He’s in a space that feels like his own, with someone who supports him and believes in him.
Looking Ahead
Rocky still has work to do as he builds his independence, and we’ll be here to support him every step of the way. His story is just one of many, but it reminds us why supported living matters so much — because when people are given the chance to choose their path, amazing things happen.
We’re proud of Rocky, and we’re grateful to the San Gabriel Regional Center for partnering with us to make this possible.
