A Journey of Hope: From Mexico to a Better Life with Homies

For many, the dream of building a better life comes with challenges, sacrifices, and an unwavering determination. For Carlos and Eric, two brothers from Mexico, their journey to the United States was fraught with struggles and uncertainty. Carlos, who has a developmental disability, faced additional obstacles in adapting to a new country. Alongside his brother Eric, they navigated the difficulties of finding stability while worrying about their mother’s battle with cancer in Tijuana.

For three long years, Carlos and Eric lived in a small trailer home, doing their best to make ends meet. Despite their determination, building a new life seemed an uphill battle. That all changed when they connected with Homies, an organization that offered more than just financial assistance—it provided a lifeline of community, friendship, and hope. With Homies’ support, the brothers were able to move into a beautiful two-bedroom home, pictured below, where they now feel safe, comfortable, and empowered to thrive.

The transformation has been life-changing. Today, Carlos and Eric not only stand on their own but also give back to their family in Tijuana, Mexico. Their mother’s health is improving, and their lifestyle has changed dramatically, enabling them to support themselves and those they love.

As Eric so beautifully puts it:

“Hello! Our names are Carlos and Eric. For us, arriving in this country was very difficult and we struggled. But thanks to God and our uncle and aunt, we were able to rent a small motorhome with what we had. Our mother has been sick with cancer and so we worried about how to care for her as well. The Regional Center and Homies have been supporting us in a very powerful way. We are very grateful and very happy because our lives have changed for the better since joining Homies. We can not only support ourselves but because Homies have changed our lifestyle we are able to also support our parents who are sick in Tijuana, Mexico. This opportunity has not only impacted us but also those around us. Our mother’s cancer is improving and our family is happy. Thank you Homies for the support, friendship and time they provide. God Bless.”
