Loneliness and the Power of Connection: Homies’ Mission

Loneliness is a significant issue that affects millions of people worldwide, and those with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to its effects. According to Vivek Murphy, the surgeon general of the United States, loneliness is the number one cause of mortality in the United States, and its impact is equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes per day (Murphy, 2021). Studies have shown that up to 60% of adults with disabilities experience loneliness on a regular basis, which can lead to a range of negative health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, and decreased cognitive functioning (Murphy, 2021).

At Homies, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to form deep, meaningful connections with others and live a life of purpose and joy. That’s why our program is designed to promote independence, companionship, and community integration. By empowering individuals with disabilities to live independently and form deep, meaningful connections with others, we hope to combat the isolation and loneliness that can contribute to poor health outcomes. Here are some of the key components of our mission:

Empowering Independence

We believe that individuals with disabilities should have the opportunity to live independently, with support and companionship that enhances their quality of life.

Deep, Meaningful Connections

The power of human connection cannot be understated. It’s what brings joy, meaning, and purpose to our lives. Homies is committed to helping individuals with disabilities form deep, meaningful relationships with their roommates and others in their community. By fostering a sense of belonging, we hope to combat the feelings of isolation and loneliness that many individuals with disabilities experience.

The Power of Choice

Choice is essential to living a fulfilling life, and we believe that individuals with disabilities should have the power to choose where and with whom they live. Homies provides a platform for individuals to find compatible roommates who share their interests and lifestyles. This creates a sense of autonomy and independence, which is crucial to living a happy and healthy life.

Community Integration

Community integration is a key component of Homies’ mission. We believe that individuals with disabilities should have the opportunity to form meaningful connections with others in their community. This includes social activities, volunteering, and other events that bring people together. By promoting community integration, we hope to combat the feelings of loneliness and isolation that can contribute to poor health outcomes.

At Homies, we’re committed to bringing people together and combatting the public health crisis of loneliness. If you or someone you know could benefit from our program, please reach out to us. We’d love to help you find the perfect roommate and companion to share life’s joys and adventures with.
